We've been around for more than 75 years, something you might not know!In Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Vernon Rudolph rented a building in what is now known as Old Salem, acquired a secret yeast-raised doughnut recipe from a New Orleans French cook, and on July 13, 1937, he started selling his Krispy Kreme doughnuts to neighborhood grocery stores. As the aroma of doughnuts cooking wafted over the streets, onlookers stopped to inquire if they might get hot doughnuts. In order to offer Original Glazed doughnuts to customers directly, he cut a hole in an exterior wall.There was already a modest chain of shops, most of which were owned by families. Although they all utilized the same Kripsy Kreme recipe, each shop baked its own doughnuts. The results were consistently positive for Rudolph and Krispy Kreme, but not consistently enough. As a result, Krispy Kreme constructed a mix mill and created a distribution system that provided each Krispy Kreme location with the ideal dry doughnut mix. Next, Rudolph and his team of engineers created and constructed Krispy Kreme's own doughnut manufacturing machinery. They concentrated on enhancing and automating the doughnut-making process starting in the 1950s.Krispy Kreme held an initial public offering of common stock in April 2000. In December 2001, it opened the country's first foreign store just outside of Toronto. 2003 saw the opening of the first stores outside of North America in Sydney, Australia and London, England. Since then, more than 700 Krispy Kreme locations have opened in Puerto Rico, Turkey, Asia, Mexico, and the Middle East. We are pursuing our international expansion while also developing tastier new items, and we are quite optimistic about the future. Watch this space for future innovations.
